The New York Jets secured a core piece of their defensive future by agreeing to a four-year, $96 million contract extension with star defensive lineman Quinnen Williams.
The deal includes $66 million guaranteed while it runs through the 2027 season. Williams surpassed linebacker C.J. Mosley for the most guaranteed money in a contract in franchise history.
The 25-year-old had one year remaining on his rookie deal, which resolves a potential looming issue to retaining him.
“The success of this organization is beyond important to me and completing this deal allows me to turn all my attention to positively impacting that,” Williams said in a statement Thursday via ESPN. “I am thrilled to put forth my best efforts alongside my brothers to get prepared for this season ahead of us.”
Williams has served as an anchor to the Jets’ defensive line behind his stellar play. He’s coming off a breakout year where he recorded a team-best 12 sacks, which ranked third in the league among interior linemen.
“We are thrilled to secure Quinnen as a New York Jet for the foreseeable future, as he embodies everything we look for in our players,” General manager Joe Douglas said in a statement Thursday. “He is a leader on and off the field, who does everything asked of him and more. He is a young, ascending player who has shown a consistent ability to dominate the line of scrimmage and help this team win. We are happy to have the business of football behind us and to turn our focus to getting ready for the 2023 season.”
The Jets are building a strong core young group with Williams serving as one of the key components. New York is hoping to take a significant stride forward, especially after acquiring four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers this offseason.
