If the Los Angeles Rams win Super Bowl 56, perhaps head coach Sean McVay would consider taking some time away from the game.
Could Sean McVay be looking to take an extended vacation?
On Friday, the Los Angeles Rams’ head coach was asked about his future in the game. To the surprise of many, the 36-year-old McVay gave an insightful answer about the balance between family and football, and how with a new phase in life rapidly approaching, the next chapters are an unknown for him. Via ESPN:
“I love this so much that it’s such a passion but I also know that what I’ve seen from some of my closest friends, whether it’s coaches or even some of our players, I’m gonna be married this summer, I want to have a family and I think being able to find that balance but also be able to give the time necessary. I have always had a dream about being able to be a father and I can’t predict the future, you know? I jokingly say that.
“I don’t really know. I know I love football and I’m so invested in this thing and I’m in the moment right now. But at some point, too, if you said what do you want to be able to do? I want to be able to have a family and I want to be able to spend time with them.”
Should McVay and his Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night at SoFi Stadium in Super Bowl LVI, maybe makes walking away for an indefinite period easier. At that juncture, McVay would have been to Super Sunday twice with a victory, ensuring his place in history.
Of course, McVay could also take time to have his family and then return to coaching in his early or mid-40s once his children are in school and out of the house. He’s going to have options, and due to his age and resumè, any team with an opening would certainly try to gauge his interest in their job.
For now, it’s all speculation and McVay is about to coach in the biggest game of his life against a former colleague in the Bengals’ Zac Taylor. There are bigger matters at hand than next year.
But if McVay wins and then walks away, he’ll have done his job in Los Angeles.
