The San Francisco 49ers anticipate trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at some point. These three teams should be making a call.
It’s time for Jimmy Garoppolo to put his house on the market.
On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media at the team’s OTAs and was asked about Garoppolo’s future with the team. Shanahan was candid about what the team believes will happen, per NFL.com:
“I expect him at sometime most likely to be traded but, who knows, it’s not a guarantee. It’s been on hold when (surgery) happened and when he’s healthy, we will see what happens.”
In regards to his recovery, Garoppolo is expected to be ready for training camp after undergoing shoulder surgery on March 8. Once he’s back to full health and can pass a physical, the San Francisco 49ers can aggressively shop the veteran, who has only one year remaining on his current deal.
So should the 49ers trade him, which teams should be the most interested? Here’s the short list:
3. New York Giants
While the Giants say they’re committed to giving Daniel Jones another chance, he’s entering the final year of his deal after the new front office declined his fifth-year option. Jones has trended downward for a few seasons, and Garoppolo could give New York a real chance to compete in a middling NFC East. The Giants have playmakers in receivers Kadarius Toney, Darius Slayton and Kenny Golladay, and running back Saquon Barkley.
2. Seattle Seahawks
Seattle might not want to win many games this season, which makes the current situation perfect. However, should 70-year-old Pete Carroll want to compete in 2022, Garoppolo would represent a massive upgrade over Drew Lock, who was brought over from the Denver Broncos in the blockbuster deal with Russell Wilson. Whether the Niners would deal Garoppolo in the NFC West is uncertain, but Seattle can certainly outbid anybody with its bushel of picks in 2023.
1. Carolina Panthers
The easy choice is the Panthers, who both have a pressing need under center and the cap space to make the move. Carolina is trying to win now, as head coach Matt Rhule is entering his third year with only 10 wins to his name. Garoppolo would give the Panthers an infusion of talent and stability, which they haven’t had in recent campaigns as Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold have been stopgaps at best.
